Mama Spell's Holiday Spectacle on Ice: Dec. 10
Nightlife, Etc.
by Elena Passarello

Who knows how they're going to ice the floors of the CLO Cabaret (or how the cocktail waitresses will carry their trays without slipping), but make way (and make time in your schedule) for Mama Spell's Holiday Spectacle on Ice, the latest comedy/musical/monologue from on of Pittsburgh's grandest dames, Sharon "Mama" Spell.

Those who have seen Spell's cabaret before (the portable backdrop, the tap dancing, the occasional stuffed cat whizzing by on a zip wire), won't need convincing that her show is a must-see. Ditto for those who know Mama from her other projects--visual artist, cocktail preservationist, Queen of the 2003 First Night Parade, hostess-with-the-mostest, etc. Newcomers will appreciate her zany stories and songs, her adorable Mississippi accent, and, of course, her spectacular outfits. Or, to put it as simply as Mama does on her Web site: "Think Andy Kaufman + Liz Taylor/Ethel Merman = Mama Spell." Run, don't walk (or skate), to include Mama in your holiday lexicon. (655 Penn Ave., downtown. Sat., Dec. 10, 9:30 p.m. Advance, $8; $10, night of performance. Tickets: 412/456-6666, culturaldistrict.org)
